What exactly is this “Valley of the Kings”? This is the place where the pharaohs (and their families) were buried. An ancient cemetery with tombs carved into the rock. Most of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings were looted before archaeologists reached them. Which is why Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 caused a huge stir. Despite its late discovery, this tomb was full of treasures. There were golden beds, a throne, chests and the famous golden mask of Tutankhamun weighing around 10 kilograms. Today, the mask is in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and can be admired during a trip to Cairo.
